The LAE logo is a trademark of
Institute for Laboratory Automation,
Groton, MA

The Institute uses two logos, the graphic on the top left of this page is specific to the corporation. The logo on the left of this page is designed to show the key elements of the ILA's Laboratory Automation Engineering educational program:

  • an understanding of the science in the laboratory,
  • the ability to apply the appropriate engineering and automation technologies, and,
  • the recognition that automating a process in the lab affects those working there.

If the automation of laboratory processes is going to be successful, we have to address both the technical and human aspects of laboratory work. When it is appropriate we may license the LAE logo to other organizations. The conditions for licensing are still under discussion.

The intent of the graphic on the right of the header is to emphasize the point that "automation" is a matter of planning and applying technologies to a process - it is the process that is automated, not the equipment. This is one of the underlying factors in process engineering and a key point in our approach to Engineering Laboratory Automation (SM). The emphasis on "process" cuts across all scientific disciplines.
