Project & Technology Management in Lab Automation (LAE-SC-5)

In modern laboratories, automation plays a central role in getting work done – much of what is done both in research and quality control depends on intelligent instruments, robotics, and informatics.  The reliability and effectiveness of those systems is determined by the qualities of the project and programs that created them.
This 2-hour short course will review the major elements that should be considered in developing a successful project plan.

Those who want to pursue the topic in more depth should consider the “Management of Laboratory Automation Programs” as a follow-on course.

Why is this course important to you and your organization?

Effective project management is key to any lab automation programs success. Poor project management skills are often cited as one of the reasons for project over-runs and cancellations. This course will introduce you to project and technology management and to the unique factors inherent in lab automation systems.

Purpose

The purpose of this 2-hour introductory course is to provide those with no, or little project management (PM) experience, with an understanding of PM concepts and how they apply to the unique issues of laboratory automation. This course is particularly appropriate for scientists and IT personnel who are considering the development and implementation of lab automation programs including:

  • LIMS
  • ELNs
  • robotics
  • instrument data systems
  • liquid handling systems
  • bioassays, etc.

in a regulated environment (FDA, EPA, ISO, European Guidelines & Practices, etc.).This short course will review the major elements that should be considered in developing a successful project plan. Our intent is to provide you with a road-map of what you have to understand before embarking on a project.

Who should attend?

This course is intended for laboratory managers and both lab & IT personnel that are considering the development of lab automation programs.

What will the attendees get out of it?
  • an understanding of project management and planning is and what goes into that work in a laboratory environment,
  • an awareness of what it takes to manage successful projects, and,
  • an appreciation for the role process and technology management plays in successful lab automation programs

Course Outline

  • How does project & technology management fit into the scheme of laboratory work?
  • Why are these topics important to you?
  • What does project management cover?
    • Process management – laboratory automation projects depend on an understanding and evaluation of the underlying processes that are being automated. Are you automating the right process?
    • Documentation and planning – what documents and specifications are needed, how they relate to each other, scheduling, software development issues
    • Outsourcing project work
    • Validation – a natural consequence of a well designed project / program
    • Technology management - project / program management includes making allowances for changes in products and their underlying technologies. Those changes happen, so making provision for changes (including upgrades) is part of the work. How do you choose between options in upgrading a system... ex: faster robot, if you speed up that part of the work, will it just shift the bottleneck somewhere else?
